Hi Pilgrims,

How many of you searched the images of microscopic life that were published this week in the NY Times? Guilty as charged, as they were extraordinary. The video that captured my attention most was of a single heart muscle cell building its sarcomeres, the “tiny contractile machines” responsible for every heartbeat. That image, requiring over 40 hours of footage, gave researchers the rare opportunity to watch the process of a “ heart muscle cell build and continually maintain those machines.” 

Much to ponder about the human body’s life-giving organ, responsible also for how we feel, how we show up, how we orient ourselves in the many spheres of our world. One important sphere for Pilgrim is but two weeks out. You have heard (and read) Pastor Greyson invite and encourage all Pilgrims to join together in turning out for Pride Durham. If t-shirt sales are an indication, I believe you are responding to the call. 

There are lots more opportunities to get involved– starting with this weekend’s decorating festivities. Teaming up with Pilgrim’s Proudly Together this Saturday, September 19, we will bloom the bouquets for our truck beginning at 4pm. Food and fellowship to follow. 

Although the Pride Parade is still two weeks away, Saturday, October 3, there is no time like the present to sign up so we know you are coming. As is Pilgrim’s way, we tend to wait until the week of to sign up (or just show up, which is totally ok, btw), but if you are contemplating walking the route, we would sure like to know.

Let me also give a shout out for the multi-faith worship service at EERUF of which we have been a part since its inception. This year, the LGBTQ Center is co-sponsoring the event and Common Women’s Chorus is offering the gift of their music to surround and hold our time together. The theme, which dovetails nicely with Pilgrim’s ongoing conversation, is: We Belong. The service is on Thursday, October 1 at 7pm.

One last preview, with more to come next week, will be Pilgrim’s own Pride worship on Sunday, October 4 where we will celebrate 27 years as an Open and Affirming Congregation, while also reflecting on the work we are being called to do at this very moment.
