The Creation Justice Team has been developing a pollinator garden near the front parking area of our church. The plan is a garden that will attract pollinators and will have host plants for butterflies to lay their eggs and plants with seed heads that will feed birds, as well. Here is a list of the (mostly native) plants we're hoping to find. If you have extra and care to contribute sign up here or email Karen at krwebbink@yahoo.com. Thanks so much for making this truly a community garden!
Plants needed: Coneflowers, Evening Primrose, Asters, Goldenrod, Salvia, Cardinal Flowers, Black-Eyed Susan, Penstemon, Coreopsis, Ironweed, Phlox, Indian Paintbrush, Tall Verbena, Baptisia, Common Boneset, and Native Sunflower. *Inspirational photo from Dee Sailstad :).
Monarch butterfly
Did You Know?
Monarch butterflies are in a continuous severe decline, largely because of the loss of Milkweed plants, the Monarch's caterpillar's ONLY food source. This is because of human development and loss of habitat, increased use of herbicides, and mowing of meadows and roadsides. The milky secretion of Milkweeds is poisonous to the butterfly's predators so the Monarch is actually rendered safe by its dependence on the Milkweed plant. In fact, certain fritteraries have evolved to mimic the pattern of Monarch coloring in order to protect themselves, flying safe under the aegis of the regal Monarch's storied presence!
