Hi Pilgrims!
Our scripture reading for Sunday is one of my absolute favorite passages (yes, I do say this about a lot of Bible stories, but I do mean it every time, I promise!!).
The story of the burning bush stokes the fires of wonder for me, a moment when God speaks through Creation to call an unlikely person to be a prophet. Moses is afraid and does not believe in his own capacity to fulfill what is being asked of him, yet God calls anyway.
The depiction of this scene in The Prince of Egypt always brings tears to my eyes. The movie shows Moses debating God, voicing his doubts and fears. After God fiercely demands that Moses not question God, the movie imagines movement of air swirling around Moses, gently lifting him, cradling him in God’s presence as God gently tells him, “Moses, I will be with you….” That imagining of tender, enveloping divine love just gets to me (watch the scene here).
As we prepare over the next couple of weeks to say thank you to outgoing, and welcome incoming, board members, we remember that the power and leadership of this church lies with the congregation. Decisions made are made together. This means that each board has a beautiful and sacred opportunity to lead how we’d like to show up as a church for our internal and wider communities. We may have doubts and fears in that responsibility, and we acknowledge that to take on such responsibility is a commitment of time and energy.
The good news is that in that responsibility we share, we carry the load together. We are, each and all, gently held in the fierce and tender love of the God who calls, accompanies, and guides us in our shared work. Thank you to all outgoing officers, and I look forward to continuing this sacred imagining with those incoming.
