June 18th Outing in Honor of Juneteenth

  • Pilgrim United Church of Christ 3011 Academy Road Durham, NC 27707 United States (map)

When: Saturday, June 18th. 9am Bagels and Short Hike, 10 am Plantation Tour

Where: Horton Grove by the Barn (southern parking spot by Sowell and Jordan trails) and/or the very nearby Stagville Plantation

Details: Juneteenth is the anniversary date of June 19, 1865, and the announcement of freedom for enslaved people in Texas, the last state with institutional slavery. The Creation Justice and Race + Equity teams have teamed up and are inviting us to enjoy being outside together while learning local history as a way of recognizing this important day. Stagville Plantation teaches about one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. The Bennehan-Cameron family claimed ownership over about 900 people who were enslaved here in Durham. Today, Stagville is dedicated to teaching about the lives and work of enslaved people on the plantation, honoring and centering their stories.

*The guided tour will be first come first served as there is limited space, however, if the guided tour is full there are special Juneteenth self guided tours available. Try to let Tom Harris know if you'll be coming for the hike so he knows how many bagels to buy and who watch for :). And if you’d like to come but need a ride e-mail Felix by Wednesday June 15th.
